Selecting the Book for the 2014 Penn State Reads Program

Nominations are sought for the common reading book for the new students entering in summer-fall 2014.

The book selected will be read by new, first-year students at University Park and several other Penn State campuses and will be the stimulus for classroom discussions, public lectures, film series, performing arts programming, residence life conversations, and other year-long engagement efforts. Criteria for selecting a book include the extent to which it lends itself to cross-disciplinary engagement (curricular and co-curricular) in areas from the arts to the sciences, from engineering to the humanities, from business to the social sciences; has broad appeal to first-year students; and facilitates engagement in current issues and events. Furthermore, the book and subsequent programming should build a sense of community among new students, encourage intellectual engagement within and beyond the classroom, stimulate critical thinking, and foster connection to Penn State's mission and core values.

To nominate a book for consideration, please send a complete citation and a brief paragraph explaining the reason for your nomination to by June 24, 2013. Also, if you are interested in reading a short list of books and providing feedback on those books, please indicate that by email to by June 28, 2013.

We ask that you share this information broadly.
