Extended Deadline: December 5, 2011 at 5pm EST

The Summer Fellowship Program, the most notable student out-reach effort of IRTS, teaches up-and-coming communicators the realities of the business world through an expense-paid fellowship, which includes practical experience and career-planning advice. Each year college juniors, seniors and graduate students are selected nationwide to participate in the nine-week Summer Fellowship Program.

The Program begins with an extensive one-week orientation to broadcasting, cable, advertising, and interactive media. Fellows have a rare opportunity to question industry professionals at panels, lectures, and group discussions. They also take related field trips and learn career planning, networking and interviewing skills by attending industry social functions.

Following this first week, Fellows gain full-time "real world" experience at New York-based media corporations to which each is assigned for the duration of the nine-week Fellowship. Fellows are then able to reinforce or redefine specific career goals before settling into a permanent job in the electronic media industry.

Date: June 3 - August 4, 2012

Location: New York, New York

Cost: Travel, housing, and living allowance included.

Eligibility: The Summer Fellowship Program is competitive. Students must be college juniors, seniors or graduate students at the time of application. For detailed eligibility information, log on to our website www.irts.org and follow the link to "College Programs."

All applications should be sent to SUBMIT@IRTS.ORG

Information can also be found on the IRTS website about the IRTS Broadcast Sales Associate Program, which is held in tandem with the Summer Fellowship Program. Liberal Arts Mentor Program Accepting Applications

Extended Application Deadline: December 15

How do you make the Penn State network work for you?  How do you leverage the connections of Liberal Arts alumni?

Participate in the Liberal Arts Mentor Program---applications now being accepted.

All Liberal Arts students intending to graduate in spring, summer, or fall of 2013 are eligible for the Liberal Arts mentor program, which is designed to help students develop professionally and explore career options by connecting them one-on-one with alumni.

Applications for the next program cycle, which starts in the spring, will be accepted till December 15, 2011.

Visit the program web-page for complete information and the on-line application.

The mentor program does not take a lot of time but can reap big benefits. Though it is not a job- or internship-finding program by design, a good number of students have in fact achieved such results through excellent relationship-building and communication with their mentor. At the very least, you will develop clearer career plans, a top-quality résumé, a professional reference, and access to your mentor's network. View it as an investment in yourself and your professional development.

Here are some recent comments from students:
  • Thanks for making the wonderful alumni mentoring program possible! I've yet to stop raving!
  • The mentor program was the best thing I've done as a Penn State student
  • Thank you so very much for opening the Penn State network to me and putting me in touch with my mentor. I'm very excited to say I have a paid internship with her agency this summer!
  • Thank you again for matching me with (Beth) through the alumni mentor program. She was and continues to be an excellent mentor.
  • I had a very successful matching and have had wonderful experience.
